Why You Shouldn't Delay Your Own Health; Even If You Care for Others

The Hidden Risk of Delaying Your Own Care

As I continued further into nursing, I realized just how much my words truly matter to the patients and clients I care for. The guidance I give isn’t just information, it has the potential to prevent serious conditions, complications, and long-term damage to the body. And that realization forced me to ask myself an important question:

Am I living the same advice I give?

The Reality Patients Are Facing

One thing I hear often from patients and clients is confusion.

They come to me with questions like:

Is this medication safe for me at my age?”

“Which option is actually the safest?”

Why do I feel like I’m not getting enough explanation?”

More and more, I’m noticing a pattern; people are not always getting the time, clarity, or support they need to feel confident in their healthcare decisions.

With so much information out there, it becomes overwhelming.

So how do you know what to trust? From my perspective, the answer comes down to experience, clinical understanding, and the ability to use that knowledge without getting lost in the system or pressured by it. Because at the end of the day, the patient simply wants one thing: To be healthy and safe.

The Shift I Had to Make

As I was guiding others, I realized something important:

I couldn’t continue encouraging healthy habits in others while not adhering to my own. I made a decision to become more intentional about my health, not just for myself, but for the integrity of the care I provide.

What I Changed

I started with the basics:

Eating out less and preparing more meals at home.

Focusing on a well balanced diet.

Rotating different colored fruits and vegetables regularly.

Reducing sugar and limiting heavily salted foods.

I also learned something important about balance:

I didn’t completely cut out foods I enjoy, I just became more mindful.

Pizza is still something I enjoy, just not multiple times a week.

Ice cream became lower in sugar and more health conscious options.

Over time, my taste changed. Foods that were once normal started to feel overly sweet or heavy. That awareness alone showed me how much my body had adjusted.

The Impact on Long-Term Health

The changes weren’t just physical, they were whole body improvements:

Better quality sleep.

Increased energy and agility.

Improved mood stability.

Less fatigue.

Greater ability to handle daily stress.

And most importantly:

I gained a deeper understanding of what my patients go through.

I now truly understand how difficult consistency can be and how powerful it is when maintained.

Why Caregivers Often Put Themselves Last

Ignoring my health doesn’t help me grow, mentally, physically, or professionally.

And it certainly doesn’t align with the level of care I want to provide.

If I’m asking my patients to take their health seriously, then I must do the same.

Not out of perfection, but out of integrity.

Final Thought

Your health is not something to delay or ignore.

Small, consistent changes can make a significant difference over time.

And if you’ve been putting yourself last, I want you to consider this:

What would change if you started taking your own advice seriously?

If this resonates with you, you’re not alone, and you don’t have to navigate it alone either.

If you can relate, start with one small change today and don't ignore your healthy any longer.
